On World Health Day 2005, the ‘Global Network for Women’s and Children’s Health Research’ will launch a major initiative of training community-based birth attendants in Neonatal Resuscitation skills for reducing early neonatal mortality in the developing world. The project, supported by a unique public-private partnership between the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, USA and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, will be implemented at eight Global Network Sites located in South Asia, Africa and South America including GN Site 8, J N Medical College, Belgaum.
Nearly 80 communities – a community being defined as a geographical medical service-based area with approximately 500 births per year – will participate in the study aimed at comparing the efficacy of Neonatal Resuscitation Program of American Academy of Pediatrics with the WHO Integrated Management of Pregnancy and Childbirth: Pregnancy, Postpartum, and Newborn Care Guide for Essential Practice (2003): Neonatal Education Program. More than 40,000 births per year will be assessed over the two year study period at the participating GN sites.
The outcome of this ambitious project, one of the largest exercises of its kind in the world, will impact newborn survival from birth asphyxia and will likely shape policy decisions regarding future training of birth attendants across the globe.
