  • GN 4 AIM II - Brazil/Chile/Argentina: Birth Defects Treatment and Prevention Program — Tertiary Prevention by Systematic Pediatric Care

    A study being conducted with 41 hospitals belonging to Estudio Colaborativo Latino Americano de Malformaciones Congenitas (ECLAMC), a birth defects registry that has been active in South America since 1967. The objectives of the study are:

    1. To determine if there is a significant decrease in neonatal mortality in children born with cleft lip and/or cleft palate following a high-intensity program of pediatric care in the first month of life;
    2. To measure the impact of having a child born with nonsyndromic cleft lip and palate on subsequent infant/family health over 2 years, and to reduce that impact by intervention using a systematic pediatric care strategy.

  • GN 4 AIM III - Brazil: Birth Defects Treatment and Prevention Program: Oral Cleft Prevention Program

    A community-based, randomized trial in the state of Sao Paulo with patients registered at the Hospital de Reabilitação de Anomalias Craniofaciais (HRAC). The aim of this study is to reduce the recurrence of nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P) in a high-risk group of women supplemented with folic acid (4.0 mg vs. 0.4 mg) from preconception and continuing throughout the first 3 months of pregnancy.

  • GN 5 - Brazil: Antioxidant Therapy to Prevent Preeclampsia

    A randomized, controlled trial testing whether the joint administration of the antioxidants vitamin C (1000mg) and vitamin E (400IU) will reduce the incidence of preeclampsia among chronically hypertensive pregnant patients and patients with a past history of preeclampsia/eclampsia. The study is currently being conducted at Universidade de Pernambuco in Recife, Brazil.

  • GN 7 - India: Prevention of Infection in Neonates

    A study monitoring the occurrence of neonatal sepsis in community- and hospital-born infants, determining sources of sepsis, and developing interventions for sepsis prevention (e.g., probiotic supplements).
