| Pediatric Acute Gastroenteritis: Clinical Assessment, Oral Rehydration and Antiemetic Therapy | |
| Abstract Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in the pediatric population remains a significant cause of pediatric patient morbidity and mortality. For these patients, oral rehydration therapy is an intervention that should be initiated with the first signs and symptoms of AGE. Oral rehydration therapy should be based on the degree of clinical dehydration. Clinical findings, such as those used in the clinical dehydration score, should be utilized as a means to standardize the dehydration assessment. Recent evidence supports the use of ondansetron, both orally and intravenously, to facilitate oral rehydration when vomiting is a concern. Consideration should be given to a trial of ondansetron therapy in the management of children with AGE to potentially avoid intravenous rehydration and hospital admission. | |

| Volume 3: Reporting of Systematic Reviews of Micronutrients and Health: A Critical Appraisal (March 2009). | |
| Background: The quality of nutrition-related systematic reviews (SR) is an unstudied but important factor affecting their usefulness. Objective: To evaluate reporting quality of published SRs and identify areas for improvement. Design: Descriptive and exploratory analyses of reporting quality (7 nutrition items and 28 SR reporting items) of all English-language SRs published through July 2007 linking micronutrients and health outcomes in humans. Factors that may to be associated with the reporting quality were also evaluated. | |
| Volume 2: Issues and Challenges in Conducting Systematic Reviews to Support Development of Nutrient Reference Values: | |
| “…..Nutrient reference values have significant public health and policy implications. Given the importance of defining reliable nutrient reference values, there is a need for an explicit, objective, and transparent process to set these values. The Tufts Medical Center Evidence-based Practice Center assembled a group of nutrition experts from academic institutions and federal government agencies, led participants in discussions, conducted exercises in formulating questions and evidence review criteria that would be amenable to systematic reviews of the scientific literature, performed a literature search on the questions to identify potentially relevant publications, and identified challenges and limitations of applying this method to support the development of nutrient reference values, using vitamin A as an example. | |

| Evaluation of malaria diagnostic tests by WHO and partners finds variation in test performance | |
| GENEVA–The largest-ever independent, laboratory-based evaluation of rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) for malaria has shown that some tests on the market perform exceptionally well in tropical temperatures and can detect even low parasite densities in blood samples, while other tests were only able to detect the parasite at high parasite densities. The evaluation was co-sponsored by the WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific (WPRO), WHO-based Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) and the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND). Testing was performed at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Forty-one commercially available RDTs went through a blinded laboratory evaluation. The findings will serve as a tool for countries to make informed choices, from among the dozens of tests commercially available, on the purchase and use of rapid diagnostics that are best suited to local conditions. | |

RTGs are awarded, on a competitive basis, for studies leading to a postgraduate degree, or for acquiring specialized skills. Studies must be on one or more of the TDR target diseases - malaria, leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis, lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis, African trypanosomiasis and Chagas disease, leprosy, dengue and tuberculosis, in laboratory, clinical, applied field research and social sciences disciplines, relevant to TDR and/or national priorities. See the TDR website at for TDR's priority research areas. The training may take place in the home country, in another developing country, or in a developed country. TDR reserves the right to select the academic institution, research programme or TDR-funded Research & Development (R&D) project where it is felt the most suitable training can be obtained. | |
