The brochure "Health Situation in the Americas: Basic Indicators 2007" presents the latest information available on 57 basic indicators for the 48 countries and territories as well as the subregions. With regard to the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), we graphically present the malaria indicator with reference to MDG six.

The figure illustrates the malaria situation in 2000, 2006, and the proposed over-all goal for 2015. We also include a map showing the 1990 and 2004 urban/rural geographical distribution for the MDG seven, indicator "Population using improved sources of drinking water" at the national level.

Aberdeen Project (IMMPACT)  This link will take you to another Web site.
A project of the University of Aberdeen, Scotland the IMMPACT (Initiative for Maternal Mortality Assessment) also known as the
Aberdeen Project. This project (P.I. Dr. Wendy Graham, Professor of Obstetric Epidemiology at University of Aberdeen) is a seven-year effort funded primarily by the
Gates Foundation with $27.0 million. The IMMPACT network’s ultimate goal is to improve maternal health and survival in developing countries through the provision of rigorous evidence of
the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of safe motherhood intervention strategies.
IMMPACT is also developing enhanced methods and capacities for robust evaluation of health programs.

Call for Applications for the Award of Research Training Grants - 2007  This link will take you to another Web site.
The UNICEF/UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) invites applications for the award of Research Training Grants (RTG) from individuals who are nationals of, and employed in, least developed disease endemic countries (LDC) and developing disease endemic countries (DEC) with lesser developed research capacities. RTGs are awarded, on a competitive basis, for studies leading to a postgraduate degree, or for acquiring specialized skills. Studies must be on one or more of the TDR target diseases - malaria, leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis, lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis, African trypanosomiasis and Chagas disease, leprosy, dengue and tuberculosis, in laboratory, clinical, applied field research and social sciences disciplines, relevant to TDR and/or national priorities. See the TDR website at for TDR's priority research areas. The training may take place in the home country, in another developing country, or in a developed country. TDR reserves the right to select the academic institution, research programme or TDR-funded Research & Development (R&D) project where it is felt the most suitable training can be obtained.
